The composer wrote the opera after a twenty-year creative pause and the death of his main musical "opponent" Richard Wagner.
In Cyprus, overcoming the storm, after the victory over the Turks, the fleet, led by the Moorish commander-in-chief Othello, returns. Only the vicious Iago is not happy about this: he wants to destroy Othello and convinces the latter that Desdemona, his young wife, is cheating on him with Cassio, who received the promotion to which Iago himself aspired. Othello goes crazy with jealousy. Frightened and innocent, Desdemona tries in vain to justify herself. Iago's betrayal achieves the end result: Othello strangles his wife in the bedroom. Iago's terrified wife (and Desdemona's maid), Emilia, reveals the truth to everyone. Iago flees, but Othello, shocked by his own actions, stabs himself and, dying, kisses the pure Desdemona one last time.
