It turns out that not a "miracle drink", but people themselves are able to fill each other with an elixir of goodness and love.

In May 1877, the singer E. A. Lavrovskaya advised Tchaikovsky to write an opera on the plot of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. At first, this idea seemed wild to the composer, according to him, but soon he became so carried away by it that one night he wrote a script and began to play music. Tchaikovsky worshipped Pushkin. His knowledge of life, the character of a Russian person, a subtle understanding of Russian nature, the musicality of the verse aroused the composer's admiration. The libretto was written by him in collaboration with K. S. Shilovsky (1849–1893). From Pushkin's novel in verse – "an encyclopedia of Russian life", as V. G. Belinsky called it – Tchaikovsky took only what was connected with the spiritual world and personal destinies of Pushkin's heroes, modestly calling his opera "lyrical scenes".

Description: The young Count Rofrano has tender feelings for Princess Werndenberg. Despite the reciprocity of feelings, Marshallsha realizes that their union will not be durable. One morning, the princess's cousin (Baron Ochs) almost catches the lovers by surprise: but not here. Count Rofrano changes into a maid and in this form is right in front of the nose of his dissolute brother, who does not lose the opportunity to take care of the young beauty. But he was brought to his sister by a very different cause. Ochs asks Marshall for help. He is going to marry the daughter of a rich nobleman Faninal. An old tradition requires that the person who presents a girl with a silver rose be a young man of aristocratic origin. Marshall persuades Ochs to have Octavian become a "rose cavalier". She anticipates an imminent separation and, nevertheless, sends after Count Rofrano a precious rose for the future bride.
As expected, young Octavian and Sophie fell in love with each other at first sight, and because of the brazen behavior of the baron, the girl only falls more in love with the count. Intriguers Annina and Valzacchi are in a hurry to convey to Ox the news of the bride's feelings. He, in turn, tries to force the girl to conclude a marriage contract. Octavian comes to Sophie's defense and inflicts a slight wound on the baron. He raises a fuss, but soon calms down: he received a letter from the imaginary Mariandle, who appointed him a quick date, and is already anticipating a love affair. Ox rushes to the hotel, and there Octavian is waiting for him, again disguised as a woman. Despite the amazing resemblance of Mariandle to Count Rofrano, the baron cannot resist the temptation and cares for the maiden. At this moment, Annina, bribed by Octavian, breaks into the hotel and plays the role of the wife abandoned by the baron, besides, she is also allegedly the mother of many of his children. Georg Büchner’s drama fragment, on which Alban Berg based his first opera, is an unflinching case study of social injustice and human suffering. But it is also a grotesque piece that thrives on exaggeration – and in which only a fine line separates the unfathomable from the ridiculous. Accordingly, director Andreas Homoki forgoes all realism.
